Learning Differences

Services Provided by the Holy Cross Learning Consultant for Students with Learning Differences

  • Identify students with learning differences and/or slow learners on whom he/she will focus
  • Requesting of testing information from parents of students with documented learning difficulties
  • Seeking of testing for students with undocumented learning disabilities or dated documentation
  • Meet with parents of students on a 504 Plan early in the school year
  • Provide student profile and resources to teachers as needed
  • Provide in-service for teachers, giving practical suggestions for classroom accommodations and clarify the responsibility of the teacher when working with students with learning differences
  • Offer guidelines to teachers who have students with special needs including classroom observation of students when needed
  • Meet individually with identified students after obtaining weekly progress reports from teachers as needed
  • Work with Juniors and Seniors with learning differences concerning suggestions for contact with college, preparing for ACT/SAT, etc.
  • Coordinate testing services, such as oral and extended time testing
  • Arrange and facilitate a case conference meeting for slow learners and students with documented learning differences
  • Facilitate groups from special needs students which include transitioning to high school and study, organizational, and test-taking skills
  • Keep abreast of the current ethical and legal issues surrounding learning disability students and how these apply to the individual student at Holy Cross
  • Be the liaison between the Catholic elementary school, the special needs coordinator at the Archdiocese, and the Jefferson County Public School system providing resources to our students
  • Represent the school at recruitment functions i.e. High School Showcase, DePaul School High School Night, other such activities to meet parents and prospective students who need services provided by the Learning Consultant
  • Consult with parents of prospective students to arrange for an untimed testing of the Placement Test for an incoming student
  • Meet with prospective students, after acceptance to Holy Cross, to review test information and discuss accommodations
  • Offer Academy of Reading 2000, a comprehensive software program that helps students realize their full potential
  • Offer classroom sound field systems
